So, Vista’s Out.

Posted in Technology. on January 31, 2007 by caleb.

I was watching the news last night, and among the stories, there was one that caught my eye and ear.

“Windows Vista Official Launch”

So, what’re the selling points?

1. Better security.
Gee…sounds familiar. Wonder how long before there’s new viruses catering to Vista. That still doesn’t change the fact that there are 60,000 viruses for Windows, 10 for Linux and 5 for Mac. Ha.

2. Floating Windows.
Gee…I believe Mac can already do that, and so much more.

3. Beautiful 3D graphics.
Wonder how many CPU’s will be able to support the 3D graphics of the OS, let alone apps, image processing, video editing, and still make everything look and work so effortlessly.

May I recommend Mac OS X Tiger?

Incidentally, the catchphrase for Mac OS X Leopard is ‘Hasta la vista, Vista’. Say it with the Arnold Schwarzenegger accent and you’re good to go.

The Mac, it just works.

Photography Quiz.

Posted in God., Updates. on January 29, 2007 by caleb.

Pray for me. Photography is one module I really want to ace. I really want to score; I really want to do my best.

Why?

Because

1) God gave me this gift, this talent. To give my second best and get by is not something I’d like to do. I want to make sure I give my first fruits, and scoring well is one way I can glorify God and attempt to show my gratitude for this talent.
2) I want to do my dad proud. He was a photographer when he was younger. I want to make him smile when he sees the result, to know that all the time and money invested
was not in vain.
3) I want to do Liang proud, for teaching me a lot of photography stuff.

Pray with me. Pray for me. I covet thy prayers. I am going to take the quiz in ten minutes. My only request is that the result will be glorifying to God, and bring a smile to my dad’s face.

Liang is leaving.

Posted in Photography., Sad. on January 29, 2007 by caleb.

Can you imagine?

I can’t.

No more photography tips and tricks. No more gear talk. No more jamming together. Liang is flying off to down-under, and I’m stuck here with the fallen sky and the rain; no, I’m not awakening.

i’ll miss Liang.

This song, though not fully applicable, is dedicated to you.(I left verse 1 out.)

Yesterdays – Switchfoot.

Crawling on the ocean floor
I feel weightless, numb & sore
A part of you in me is torn
But you’re free
I woke from a dream last night
I dreamt that you were by my side
Reminding me I still had life in me

I remember you like yesterday, yesterday
I still can’t believe you’re gone
I remember you like yesterday, yesterday
And until I’m with you, I’ll carry on

i’ll miss Liang.

Studying for photography.

Posted in Photography., Thank yous/Encouragements., Updates. on January 28, 2007 by caleb.

Studying for photography.

That’s what I’m doing right now. Strange, isn’t it? It feels really weird. I’m studying things that come naturally, decisions that come during the seconds before the shutter release is pressed. Then there are the things you never ever think of when you’re shooting: the parts of your SLR, what the definition of ‘aperture’ is.

Then there was Sec 1 Mass Cell today. I’ve been attending, helping and shooting at (all) four of these so far. The interesting thing to note: I’m not actually a CM for the Sec 1s.

Yet there is something strange. Today while on the way to soccer, I was talking with Kenneth, who also had been going down to help out. Likewise, Kenneth isn’t a CM for Sec 1s, but has been going down to help and support his brother, Keith. (Yes, for all those who don’t know, they’re brothers.) I realised, when talking to him, that I’ve built a bond with some of the Sec 1s.

It’s something that
1) I never expected
2) Happens/happened subconsciously

It’s so unexpected. I never once expected, nor predicted this coming. It’s amazing that I’ve gotten to know some of the Sec 1s, and I pray that as the mass cells go on, I will build more friendships, and that these friendships will strengthen.

Next week, we go to the Botanic Gardens for a CNY special mass cell. I’m eagerly anticipating it, for reasons strange and not-so-strange.

1) I’m renting a 17-40mm f/4L lens to try out, and what better event to try this lens out than this?
2) I hope bonds will be strengthened and new friendships formed during this event.

Anyway, to everyone who’s getting stressed, here’s one phrase that best describes what you have to do, or rather what you should avoid (pardon the singlish):

“cannot lean on own strength. sure fail.” -Joey Asher Tan.

To Jan,
This week promises to be tough. It promises to wear you down, tire you out and stretch your limits.

Then again, what are your limits compared to God’s strength? In Psalm 100, the Word of God says,

“For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.” (Psa 100:5)

His grace and love are more than enough, more than you could ever need. Rely on Him. You must, if you are to go through this storm. Know that you are not alone. You have God to lean on.

Remember the story of the footprints? In troubled times, there was only one set of footprints. The man was puzzled and asked God, “why?”.

“When you were in those troubled times, I carried you on my shoulders.”

Trust, and have faith that God will be there for you, and He will carry you through this storm. If you are faithful to Him, He will be faithful to you. His love endures forever. Forever.

Take care, Jan. Get enough rest, and remember, you must rely on God’s strength to pull you through, not your own. On our own, sure fail. With God, all things are possible, through Him who gives me strength.

In His love,
Caleb.

And all too soon…

Posted in God., Happy., Music., Updates. on January 26, 2007 by caleb.

The weekend is upon us, not that I don’t appreciate it. This week has been – let’s just say it’s been a mediocre week. There are plenty of things to be thankful for, some things I wish I didn’t do, some outcomes I didn’t prefer, and so on (I’m sure you wouldn’t want to read the rest of the list).

Music of the week: Oh! Gravity by Switchfoot. Not one of their usual albums, certainly not their usual sounding music. It’s different. I wouldn’t say it’s worse because there are songs that sound more mature, with more cleverly-written, thought-invoking lyrics. ‘Faust, Midas and Myself’ is one song that I enjoy very much. Very open to interpretation, and certainly a reminder about materialism. Gold isn’t everything, you know.

Blog of the week: My own. (Eh, this is my blog. I write what I want. As long as it isn’t illegal, live with it, or skip this paragraph. Heh.) In case you, the reader, hasn’t noticed, this is a spankin’ new blog, hosted by WordPress. Why did I choose WordPress? It’s so funky. Go ahead, roll your cursor over a link on the links section. You’ll see a preview of the page you’re about to open. You can’t deny the funkiness. It even allows custom image headers. The header you currently see is designed by yours truly. The best, sell-out factor: I get to import all my posts, yes, all, over from my old blog to here. How cool is that? Don’t deny it; you’re amazed.

Quote of the week: Lanz, while at pool during David’s birthday. “Our noob thinking is that we block all six holes, then win by one ball.” Priceless, I tell you. Nuggets of wisdom from Lanz.

Birthdays of the week: David CHOOOOOOO (I’m beginning to realise why Jan loves doing that so much, so fun. Hurrr.), Jenn, Johann, Eunice. Duno if I missed any of ‘em.

Moment of the week: My long worship session yesterday. I really enjoyed that. Inspirational, I tell you. Taken from Joey’s blog, worship is…

“… the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of imagination by His beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose – and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which one nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.”

- William Temple

Read it again and again; I learn something new each time. It’s really fwah!

Song of the week:

Awesome GodHillsong United
Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from Heaven above
With wisdom, power & love
Our God is an awesome God

Four lines, twenty-two words, amazing expression and emotion.

With that, I bid you, adieu.

What people say about Sam(’s hair).

Posted in Humour. on January 25, 2007 by caleb.

Hello again. This is the sequel to the first quote post. Today, we look at what people say about Sam(’s hair).

It all started on Saturday, with Joshua.

“Sam! What happened to your hair?!”

Others caught on fast.

“You can buy my CDs for only $8. The only thing is I can’t sell them inside so Samuel will be helping me sell them outside. You can get them from him. Oh, and don’t mind his haircut, lah.” -Daniel Heng, at the Ben&Jerry’s gig.

Ok lah, let’s not be so mean. On to other quotes.

I quizzed Liangzhi on his gig’s set this Saturday. Upon asking him whether the set would be repeated, Liang replied,

“No. We’re not stir.”

Hmm. Something to stir your train of thought.

Lately my JC friends have been telling me about new lecturers and classmates. Some notable ones are

Lecturer: “How do you draw this graph?”
Josh’s classmate: “With a pencil.”
Textbook answer. Right on.

Lanz’s lecturer: “You know you all have to buy graphcal (graphic calculator) right?”
Class: “Uh, yeah.”
LL: “You know that it’s quite expensive right?”
C: “Uh, yeah.”
LL: “You know ah, I like to keep the expensive thing in my pocket.”
C:
LL: “But I think that you can’t keep it inside your pocket during PE, right?”
C: “Yeah.”
LL: “So why not you all keep the graphcal inside the classroom, then I lock up all together for you.”

Okaaay. I don’t have any more quotes (that I can think of, offhand), so I will close with the (corrected) teh-ping quote.

“How can you not like teh-ping? It’s God’s gift to man.” – Joshua Toh.

First (WordPress) Post.

Posted in Information. on January 25, 2007 by caleb.

Hello, and this is finally official.

I have moved over from Blogger to WordPress.

This layout, as you have probably observed by now, is much neater, and much more pleasant to look at.

The deciding factors that made me go for WordPress were the ability to add pages, categorise posts, do a customised widget sidebar and so on.

The only grievance I have right now is: no tagboard.

But, fret not. You can actually continue tagging by going over to the page called ‘Tag’ and treat it like you’d treat a tagboard. Go there and leave comments. It’s the tagboard page. I have yet to decide how it’ll work long-term, but don’t worry too much. Go there and tag to your heart’s content.

As the introduction said, enjoy your visit here, and may it be a pleasant one. Have a nice day, and God bless.

JFL.

Posted in Uncategorized on January 24, 2007 by caleb.

JFL stands for Just For Laughs. In today’s JFLs, we look at not-so-famous quotes by some not-so-famous people, namely R-Agers.

Quote 1: During mini-soccer-freekick-handome-cup competition. The objective was to kick the ball into a cardboard box with an opening of about 50cm x 50cm. While our dear Kian Boon was taking a kick, and we were disturbing him, as was the practise when it wasn’t your turn, Lester mentioned this very memorable quote to put the disturbers off:

“Thou shall not interrupt thee.” -Lester Ang.

“Thou shall not interrupt thee. Doesn’t that mean ‘You shall not interrupt you’?” Joey queried. We all burst out laughing.

Quote 2: During pool, after David’s birthday dinner. Lanz was explaining the new “Lanz’s law of physics with regards to pool”. His theory went along the lines of this, I believe:

“Our noob philosophy is that we block 6 holes with 6 balls, then win by one ball.” -Lanz Toh.

This one is champion, regardless of whether you remember your physics’ left hand rule and right hand rule.

Quote 3: From a tee-shirt. Let’s just say this wasn’t really a quote, but it’s funny nontheless. Take singlish, make it worse, and you get this. This was on Kenneth’s tee.

“I’m go play football” -Kennaf’s tee-shirt.

Quote 4: From a good friend, who swears by teh-ping. No, it isn’t Sam.

“Teh-ping is good; it’s God’s gift to man.” -Joshua Toh.

Dude, where’s the connection? Good quote though. I’ll never forget it. Heh.

Quote 5: If you think that was nonsensical, check this one out.

“I cut my hair short now, so I’ll look better when it grows back”

No prizes for guessing who said this. If you can’t guess, you still have two weeks. Just a hint, it’s not Samuel Tan. Sure, it’s not.

Quote 6: Need to justify a purchase? Do it the Jon Wong way. Of course, your purchased item must fit the requirements first, lah.

“It’s not what I build, but what I build better with what I buy.” -Jon Wong.

Didn’t get that, I bet. It’s so deep. Haha.

Quote 7: Let me conclude with the currently most-used quote. This quote (or its variants) has been heard very frequently, as long as there is a competive game involved. The original:

“Who win, who handsome.” -Joey Asher Tan.

Hope you had a good laugh. I did, recollecting some of these quotes.

Our God Is An Awesome God.

“We function on Grace, and not on our own strength” -Joel Tay.

Lord, I cry out to Thee. I need Thy grace.
Need Thy mercy and Thy strength.
Desire to seek Thy face, in Thy Holy place.

Lord, I want to be still, and know You are God.
I want to be quiet, and be awed.
By Your everlasting love, Your grace so free.
The life that you sacrificed on the cross for me.

Goin’ down.

Everything seems to be going down.

The s**t hit the fan. Now what?

I should just shut up. That way none of this would’ve happened.
